Chinese New Year 2017 Tour

Danial, Safwan and I kicked off the Year of the Fire Rooster with a three day / two night credit card tour from Kuala Lumpur to Port Dickson, Melaka, and Seremban.

On the morning of Day 1, Safwan and Danial rode from Bangsar to the McDonald’s at Ampang Park.  I met them there.  This would be the standard start to each day.  Breakfast at McDonald’s.

The ride along the MEX Highway was quieter than usual.  Being the second day of Chinese New Year, the roads everywhere were relatively empty.

We made a short “nature calls” stop at the Seri Kembangan R&R.  Then another stop at the PETRONAS station in Dengkil, for provisions.

Other than a few stops for traffic lights, like this pretty long wait at the junction of the Nilai – KLIA Highway (Federal Route 32) and Jalan Besar Salak (Selangor State Route B48), we kept moving for the next two hours.

Our next stop for a drink and a bathroom was at the Shell station in Sepang.

After that is was over the lumps on Federal Route 5 to Lukut, and then the flatter closing 12km / 7.5km to Port Dickson.  About 100km / 62mi for the day.

It was lunch time when we arrived in Port Dickson.  We had cendol and rojak at Azmi Cendol, and the guys bought cheap flip flops from a nearby shop,  before we rode to the Waterfront Boutique Hotel.

After a shower, in my case whilst wearing my kit so it got a wash as well, I took a short nap.  Then we met in the lobby for the short trip around the corner to Starbucks Coffee.  A venti Mocha Frappuccino hit the spot.

That evening we revisited Restoran Seri Mesra Ikan Bakar for dinner.  We had eaten there during a BCG Tour to Port Dickson.  Fortunately we didn’t have to cycle the 11km / 7mi to the restaurant.  Darshini had made a day trip to Port Dickson, so we had a car ride there and back.

There was the option for another Starbucks after dinner, but I was fading.  We planned a 7.00am start, so I fell into bed and was soon fast asleep.

My kit was dry, and more importantly, not smelling funky, at the crack of dawn.  We checked out of the hotel and rolled the few hundred meters to McDonald’s for breakfast.

Melaka here we come!

The roads between Port Dickson and Melaka, along Federal Route 5, Federal Route Route 138, Melaka State Route M142, and back onto Federal Route 5, are very pleasant.  The road surface is good, and there isn’t much heavy vehicle traffic to contend with.

33km / 20.5mi from Port Dickson, we crossed the Sungai Linggi, which at that point doubles as the border between the states of Negri Sembilan and Melaka.  We did notice that the road narrowed a bit, and changed colour, once we crossed into the state of Melaka.

We made an early lunch stop at Restoran Kuala Seafood, in Kampung Kuala Sungai Baru.  Not everything on the lunch buffet menu was ready yet, but there was enough on offer for us to fill our tummies.

Our lunch stop, or more accurately, our brunch stop, came about halfway to Melaka.  We made a semi-emergency stop 10km / 6mi further on, at the Petron station in Masjid Tanah.  Danial needed an ice-cream to quell the flames in his stomach from the too-spicy curry he ate at lunch.

We had planned to ride non-stop the rest of the way to Melaka town.  We got to Tanjung Kling before large raindrops began to fall.  We ducked under the first shelter we could find, and waited out the rain.

I was quite smug about having packed shoe covers and a rain vest.  I put those items on as we waited for the rain to stop.  Twenty minutes later we rolled out onto the wet road.  We could hardly have gone more than a kilometer before the road changed to being completely dry, and the sun was out.  I wasn’t so smug anymore.

We had been caught, quite literally, under a cloudburst.  And now it was sunny and dry, and I was getting hot under my vest.  We started making jokes about my rain gear having the power to repel rain.

It was 12km / 7.5mi to Melaka from Tanjung Kling.  There was a traffic jam for most of that distance into Melaka.  I was glad to be on a bicycle.  We stopped on the bridge over the Sungai Melaka for a photograph of the river.  A river that is much cleaner these days.

Then it was off the bridge and around the corner to the Fenix Inn.  The bicycle-friendly hotel that we have stayed at before.

Our post-ride routine was identical to the one the day before.  A shower with kit on, a short nap, and then a walk to the Starbucks Coffee next door to the hotel.  The guys even had to buy flip flops.  It turned out that the RM2.50 / USD0.60 flip flops they had bought in Port Dickson weren’t such a good deal after all.  They were more stiff plastic than rubber, and were very uncomfortable.  So the guys left them in Port Dickson.

I was happy to wait until dinner to eat anything.  Danial and Safwan were peckish, and wanted to try the chicken rice balls at Ee Ji Ban Chicken Rice Ball.  I related my disappointing experience with the chicken rice balls at that restaurant.  Ee Ji Ban Chicken Rice Ball has developed quite a name for itself, so the guys thought that I must have been there on an off-day.

They admitted after eating there that they should have listened to me.

Dinner was at the Restoran Ole Sayang, on the recommendation of AiLin, who is a Melaka girl.  AiLin was in Melaka for Chinese New Year, and not only came to Ole Sayang with us, but picked up the tab as well.  We owe you one Ailin.  Thank you.

A Starbucks was between the restaurant and out hotel, so we stopped for coffee and cake.  There were some brief thoughts of going on to somewhere else after Starbucks, but common sense, and age in my case, caught up.  I needed to get to sleep if I wanted to be ready for another 7.00am start.

The sharp-eyed will have spotted that Safwan had packed a second set of cycling kit.  Danial and I stuck to our wash-and-dry routine.  Which worked yet again.

Our route out of Melaka to Seremban took us onto the AMJ Highway (Federal Route 19).  A road which is characterized along its entire length by rolling terrain.

Compounded on the day by a headwind that blew all the way to Seremban.  All that up and down riding against the wind was thirsty work.  We stopped at the R&R at Simpang Ampat for a cold drink.  We had covered all of 31km / 19mi.

The sun had come out in full force while we were at the R&R.  I pulled on my arm screens, and made a mini keffiyeh out of a bandana to keep the sun off the back of my neck.  Of course, as soon as we got going, the cloud cover rolled in and blocked out the sun.

We were blessed with excellent rising weather over the three days.  Apart from brief periods of bright sun, we rode in overcast and cool conditions.  We think my bandana was the charm.

Our plan was to hop onto the KTM Komuter at Seremban, rather than ride all the way back to Kuala Lumpur.  After 39km / 24mi we turned left off the AMJ Highway onto Jalan Seremban – Tampin, which roughly paralleled the rail tracks we would be on later.

The guys were hungry at about the 50km / 31mi mark, so we stopped at Isyani Café in Rembau.  They devoured large plates of fried rice, and I sucked down a couple of iced Milos.

There were 30km / 18.5mi to go to Seremban.  Or more precisely, to Restoran Nelayan Seafood, which is where Danial wanted to have lunch.  That restaurant is well-known for its masak lemak dishes, which are a Negri Sembilan speciality.  A variety of meats, fowl and seafood are cooked in a coconut milk and bird’s eye chilli gravy, which is coloured a rich yellow by turmeric.

The guys ate well.  Luckily it was only a few hundred meters from the restaurant to the train station.

RM11 / USD2.50 each for ourselves and our bikes, and we were in air-conditioned comfort for the ninety-minute train ride to the Bank Negara station.

I skipped eating at Restoran Nelayan Seafood.  I was looking forward to the Lamb Balls and Egg at Born & Bread Café.  A mere 4km / 2.5mi from the Bank Negara station.  Admittedly through some heavy traffic.  It was worth the wait and the ride!

The Tandem Men Depart Kuala Lumpur

After three days of rest and relaxation, and catching up with friends, John Whybrow and George Agate resumed their circumnavigation of the globe by tandem bike.

Nine of us met John and George, and their hosts from the previous night, for breakfast in the Ampang area.  This restaurant is a branch of a very well-known eatery in Alor Setar, Kedah.

Breakfast was the staple that is roti canai, or the less usual nasi kandar.  Then it was time to start pedalling, but not before some group photographs.

It was 9.30am when we started leading John and George from the restaurant onto the MEX highway, and then onto the KESAS highway.  Retracing the route we took with them into KL.

KESAS was the preferred option, rather than alternate routes out of KL, because of the motorcycle lane that is separate from the main roadway.

Which gave me the opportunity to distract George with some chatter.

My Flipside friends and I regularly ride along the KESAS highway between Bukit Jalil and Bandar Botanic.  We often stop for breakfast in the township of Kota Kemuning.  Which also happens to be where Meng Thai Cycle Sdn. Bhd. is located.  One of our favourite bike shops.

It was 11.15am.  Meng Thai normally opens at 1.30pm on Sundays.  We called Lee to see if he would open early, and give Daisy the tandem bicycle a once-over.  The doors were open when we got there at 11.30am.

Daisy got a bit more than a once-over.  Lee washed her thoroughly.

He also installed a new chain and new disc brake pads, and gave her a tuneup.

Daisy was in the best shape possible.  The only downside was that it took Lee three hours to get Daisy sorted out.  Enough time for the nine of us to talk the ears off George and John, to eat lunch at the restaurant next door, and to each have a bowl of yummy cendol.

It was hot when we started in the morning, and it was hotter when the eleven of us got back on the road at 2.30pm.  We were between Shah Alam and Klang, where the temperature reading was 33°C / 91°F.

The “feels like” temperature was even higher.  40°C / 104°F in Kota Kemuning.  Because of the temperature, the time, and how far we had to ride to get home, we decided to bid farewell to John and George when we got them back to the KESAS highway.

The guys were concerned about where they would stay for the night.  It is a three-day weekend, and when George checked during lunch, all the reasonably-priced accommodation in Port Dickson was fully booked.  Given the time that they left Kota Kemuning, they weren’t sure that they would even get to Port Dickson tonight.

The lucky charm must be working.

John and George didn’t get to Port Dickson tonight, but they did find a place to stay.  A dangau, or traditional plantation hut, in a campground near Sepang.

Here’s hoping that charm brings good luck to John and George throughout the rest of their travels.

All of us will be following their progress with great interest, and hope and pray that they get back to Canterbury safely, and as Guinness World Record holders.

The Tandem Men

Three months ago a former colleague of mine asked if he could connect me with two guys who are attempting to be the first pair to circumnavigate the globe on a tandem bicycle.  A ride that would take them through thirty countries.

Andy told me that at the time, the guys were cycling between Istanbul, Turkey and Tbilisi, Georgia.  Their route from Thailand to Singapore would bring them through Kuala Lumpur.

I replied “I would love to meet up with your friends when they come through KL.”

It then went quiet until last Monday, when I received a WhatsApp message from George Agate, one of The Tandem Men.  John Whybrow and he had just crossed the border between Thailand and Malaysia, and were on their way to Georgetown.

That’s when I opened up their website, The Tandem Men, and checked their route through Malaysia.  John and George has started their 29,000km / 18,000mi journey from Canterbury, England in June.  Since then they pedalled through France, Belgium, The Netherlands, Germany, The Czech Republic, Slovakia, Austria, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Turkey (arriving there on the day of the attempted coup d’état), and ending the European leg  of their round-the-world trip in Georgia (due to a detour after not being able to get visas to enter Iran).

They then flew from Tbilisi to Mumbai, India, to start the Asian sector.  From Mumbai they cycled down the west coast of the sub-continent to Nagercoil, before heading northeast to Chennai.  A flight across the Bay of Bengal took them to Bangkok, their first stop in South-East Asia.  Now they were almost on my doorstep.

My initial reply to George was to welcome them to Malaysia, and to suggest an alternate route for them to follow from Georgetown to Kuala Lumpur.  The route on their website was via the North-South Expressway.  This would not work because bicycles are not allowed on the North-South Expressway.  Never mind that the volume and high speed of the traffic on that highway make it a dangerous place for cyclists to be.

I suggested that they use the coastal roads through Seri Manjung and Kuala Selangor instead.  Further to pedal, but more scenic, and with less traffic to contend with.  That route would also allow my friends and I to meet them in Bandar Botanic, and to ride with them along the KESAS and MEX highways into KL.

I also offered to host them while they were in KL, and I was delighted that they took me up on my offer.

George and John did follow the coastal route, spending nights at Seri Manjung and Kuala Selangor on Tuesday and Wednesday respectively.  On Thursday morning, Lay, Marco and I rode to Bandar Botanic, where  I had suggested we meet.

The three of us got to Bandar Botanic a bit early.  We parked ourselves at Restoran Resepi Warisan for nasi lemak, teh tarik and iced coffee.  The restaurant was a couple of hundred meters from the point on Jalan Langat where I had suggested we meet.

I sent The Tandem Men our location via WhatsApp.  A few minutes later John and George rolled up to the restaurant.

Fantastic!

We got another round of drinks before heading to the motorcycle lane along the KESAS highway.

One of the many rules rules stipulated by Guinness World Records is that George and John are not allowed to draft.  So the tandem bike led the way, complete with its 35 kilo / 77 pound complement of panniers, bags and water bottles.

Taking KESAS to get into KL from the west was certainly a better option than coming in from the north via Jalan Kuching.  Not having to share the road with cars, vans and lorries is a definite plus.

Being separated from other traffic does not prevent punctures though.  George and John noticed that they had a slow leak as we neared the Kinrara R & R.  The rear tire leak was slow enough, and we were close enough to home, that we decided to take the risk of pumping it up and continuing on our way, rather than changing the inner tube.

We exited the KESAS highway at Awan Kecil and took the MEX highway to Jalan Tun Razak.

John and George graciously agreed to go to Le’Park@Nasi Lemak Malaya for dinner, and to share stories with some of my cycling friends.

The Tandem Men have so far covered 10,651km / 6,618mi over 114 days.  About one third of the distance required to become the first people to circumnavigate the world by tandem bicycle.

One of their personal goals is obviously to complete this adventure of a lifetime.  Another is to raise at least £100,000 / RM537,000 / USD130,000 for the three brilliant causes that they have chosen to support on their journey.  The work of these charities changes the lives for many, both locally and internationally. These charities are:

  • Porchlight (which will receive 34%)
  • Great Ormond Street Hospital (which will receive 33%), and
  • WaterAid (which will receive 33%)

Airports Take 2

My cycling buddies were quite amused by the story of my ride to KLIA and KLIA2.  Especially the part where I was escorted along the ELITE Highway by a PLUSRonda vehicle.  There are alternate routes to KLIA, and Liang suggested a ride along one of those routes today.  I was the only one able to take him up on his suggestion.

Liang and I met at Bukit Jalil, and by 6.45am we were on our way onto the MEX Highway.  At the Putrajaya Toll Plaza we exited left toward Putrajaya and Cyberjaya.  At the next cloverleaf intersection we took the exit to the Pintasan Dengkil Bypass.  5km / 3mi later we left the Bypass and rode into Dengkil town.

It is a simple place.  A canopy under the trees provides a pleasant space for some tables and chairs.  We watched other cyclists ride by as we breakfasted on iced Milo and roti canai.

We rejoined the Pintasan Dengkil Bypass and followed the signs toward KLIA.  14km / 9mi later we were at KLIA.  From there it was 6km / 4mi to the Arrival Hall at KLIA2.  We thought we would try our luck one level down from the Departure Hall, where I had trouble getting my bike into the building on my first ride to the airport.

This time we took no chances.

The trolley trick worked.  We got a few interested looks from the security personnel, but were able to wheel our way around without questions.  We left our trolleys outside KluangStation while we had a drink and some nibbles.

Watered and fed, we wheeled our trolleys back outside and reassembled our bikes.

We didn’t take a detour through Dengkil town on the way back to Bukit Jalil.  But we did stop at the Putrajaya Toll plaza and the Sri Kembangan R&R.  It had turned into a very hot morning, and after being broiled for an hour, we needed to rest in the shade and have a cold drink.

Take 2 was definitely an improvement over my first airport ride.  There is already interest in a Take 3.
